Everything You Need to Know About a Class C RV Rental

Once you’re ready to rent an RV, you might find yourself stuck in the options section.

You can choose from a Class A, B, C, or even a trailer.

Today, you have your eyes set on the budget-friendly traveler known as the Class C.

However, is the Class C motorhome right for your trip?

By understanding everything there is to know about a Class C RV, you can better decide if that motorhome suits your road trip needs or if you need to upgrade/downgrade.

What is a Class C RV?

Class C motorhomes are misleading. While a Class A RV is the largest of the fleet, you might assume a Class B would be the second largest.

However, Class C is the second largest compared to a Class A RV.

The Class C uses a standard cargo van for driving, typically a Ford or Chevrolet base. The cargo van gives you access to the cab from the exterior, and you have entry doors like a regular van or truck. Essentially, the Class C is a scaled-down version of the Class A beastly motorhome.

Do not assume these are without ample space inside or seating capacity. In fact, the Class C is quite roomy and ideal for the entire family traveling across the country or just headed out on a camping trip.

Class Cs are mid-sized and range from 20 to 33 feet in length.

Same Amenities as a Class A, but for Less Money

One reason renters prefer the Class C over the Class A is that it still offers living space and doesn’t confine you like the Class B motorhome. Also, you have the same amenities as the Class A, but at a cheaper cost.

The Class C RV rental includes features like:

  • Toilet and shower
  • Kitchen with storage
  • Master bedroom suite (larger units)
  • Spare bedroom
  • Rear bedroom
  • Couches and tables that convert into sleeping space
  • Storage above the cab

Driving a Class C RV is still like driving a Class A RV. However, they are easier to pull in and out of smaller camp sites. Also, you can tow a separate vehicle for your quick rides and errands on the Class C.

Better Fuel Economy

The average fuel economy for a Class C RV is better than the Class A version. Class C units average eight to 12 miles per gallon, while the Class A gets six to 10 miles per gallon.

To maximize your fuel economy, USA Today recommends opting for a diesel running Class C. Specific brands offer Diesel engines, including Volkswagen and full-efficient diesel motors. Winnebago is another diesel chassis that offers superior gas mileage.

Newer RVs will have better gas mileage, regardless of make and model. Due to restrictions and the demand for eco-friendly options, more manufacturers are creating sustainable engines that have lower fuel and maintenance costs. So, reviewing the year the RV was built might help you determine gas mileage potential too.

Examining the Pros and Cons of a Class C RV Rental

If you find yourself on the fence between the Class A RV and the Class C RV, considering the pros and cons might help you decide which is better for your trip.

The Advantages to a Class C RV Rental

  • Capacity: Class C RVs are surprisingly roomy. Sleeping capacity ranges from just three occupants to as high as 10 occupants. Some models can extend on the sides to add up to 10 occupants for sleeping. When it comes to seating, Class C RVs include three to eight seats.
  • Above Cab Storage: The Class C is unique because it includes the above-cab quarters. Depending on the manufacturer, the above cab includes a sleeping area or extra storage. Some manufacturers create an entertainment area above the cab, including TVs.
  • Self-Contained: The entire Class C comes self-contained with all the necessities you need for safe, comfortable travel.
  • Luxury Upgrades: Class Cs might include upgrades like leather recliners, granite countertops, spacious showers, and exterior add-ons.
  • Cheaper Rental Rates: A significant advantage to the Class C is the more reasonable cost to rent and fuel. Compared to a Class A, you might find Class C RV rentals for under $200.

The Disadvantages to a Class C RV Rental to Consider

  • Gas Mileage: While the gas mileage beats the Class A every time, you still average a dozen or fewer miles per gallon. Compared to your average passenger vehicle, that is not a high capacity.
  • Driving: Driving a Class C does require a learning curve. Longer units with higher capacity require extensive turning bases and longer stops too.
  • Amenities Vary: Depending on the size, the Class C you pick might not have all the luxury amenities you want. Class Cs come in a variety of models, while most Class As are considered fully-loaded.
  • Day Trips: While you are visiting the local area, if you want to take a quick day excursion or run to the store, driving your Class C is cumbersome. However, you can tow a smaller vehicle behind it - sacrificing gas mileage.
