Explore the Reconstructed Architecture of the Capitol of Saxony with an RV Rental in Dresden

Dresden is famous both for the distinctive and beautiful Meissen porcelain that has been produced there since 1710 and for the City’s amazing reconstruction of the original Old Town after World War II.

This beautiful city is known as the “Jewel Box” for its baroque and rococo architectural touches in the center of the city.

Today, Dresden is a thriving city of cultural, political, and economic diversity. Besides the wonders of history still present, Dresden is a hub for high-tech companies. It’s often referred to as “Silicon Saxony” for the sheer number of high-tech operations located there.

With both new and old sections of the city to explore, there’s no time to waste finding a place to stay. Instead, consider seeing Dresden the easy way – in a private RV rental.

Why Rent an RV in Dresden?

Dresden’s Old Town might date from the 1200s, but the City of Dresden has numerous campgrounds to park your RV—and many of them are right near the things you’ll want to see.

Here’s a list of five of the best things to take a look at in your travels around this Old-World jewel.

1. Frauenkirche

Dresden’s Church of Our Lady stands in Neumarkt Square and has recently been completely reconstructed to its former splendor. Designed by architect George Bähr, this gorgeous testimony to baroque architecture has been standing since 1726. Even though its bell-shaped dome collapsed during Allied raids in 1945, the rest of the Protestant church stood solidly until renovations began in the 1990s.

2. The Zwinger

Originally built as the forecourt for a castle, today the Zwinger hosts the Semper Art Gallery and a number of other museums, including the Porcelain Collection. Best of all, there’s an RV campground nearby, so it will be easy to enjoy the unique architecture and interesting museums.

3. Der Fürstenzug

This picture made 25,000 Meissen porcelain tiles is the world’s largest tile panorama. Created beginning in 1904, it comprised images of 1000 years of Wettin Dynasty royals on horseback, accompanied by artists, craftsmen, children, farmers, and scientists. It’s 335 feet long and features a total of 94 people.

4. Dresden Castle

One of the oldest buildings in the city, Dresden Castle has been the home of electors and kings for over 400 years. There are many different architectural styles present—from Neo-renaissance to Baroque—making it a must-see for those interested in design.

Today the castle houses a series of museums that include and art library and the Dresden State Art Collections, among others.

5. Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault)

The Green Vault is named for the formerly malachite-green colored painted columns that decorate the inner rooms. One of the oldest museums in the world, The Grünes Gewölbe holds the treasures of kings and of Dresden’s history.

Originally protected against theft with thick walls, the structure was damaged by firebombing during World War II. Now meticulously restored, the museum holds over 4,000 pieces of art and culture.

One important tip for seeing this incredible museum—you must buy tickets in advance for a specific time slot.
