By Camille Attell

In the winter of 2015, after a grueling day of work and a two-year stretch of housing and health challenges, my financially conservative, risk-averse husband turned to me and said, “we should leave everything behind and travel the country in an RV.” (You can read our full story here.)

We thought our idea to travel and work out of an RV was novel. Neither of us had much exposure to RVing and our perception was that it was something you did in retirement. But we weren’t willing to wait that long. We dove headfirst into research and discovered that not only was RVing quite popular, it was a movement.

“Movement” might be a strong word to describe the increased trend in recreational vehicle travel. Movements are often associated with a quest for social or political change. When you examine it more closely though, it’s possible that what’s happening in the RV industry goes beyond an increase in RV sales and travel.

Why is Rving growing as a movement?

RV Nomads is a documentary about the RV movement.

Did you know there’s a full-length documentary film coming out in October 2018 on the RV movement? I’m actually a project manager for the film and my husband Bryce and I will be featured, along with several other RVers.

I enlisted my fellow cast members to help me answer the question: “Why is RVing growing as a movement?” Here’s what I found out:

People are yearning for a different American Dream.

The tagline on my blog, More Than A Wheelin’, is “A Different American Dream.” That’s what it felt like we’d found when we made the decision to take up RVing full time.

My husband and I each grew up with the idea of a familiar, fail-proof roadmap in our heads: go to school, get a job, get a house with a nice green lawn, save for retirement and maybe buy an RV someday, etc.

We had built our whole lives according to this blueprint, and when we decided to step off the beaten path, it felt like we were discovering a completely different American Dream. This new dream didn’t look like what we were told it was supposed to look like. It was a dream that we imagined for ourselves.

The Meinhofers are a full-time RVing family of four.

“RVing is growing as a movement because the American Dream isn’t the only dream to have,” say Robert and Jessica Meinhofer from Exploring the Local Life.

“There is no escaping work, parenting (unless you don’t have kiddos), laundry and spousal disagreements. But living your life on purpose, knowing that you made choices that pull you away from working in a cubicle and rushing through traffic … deciding to be present in your daily life doing what you enjoy with those you love … learning to see your kids as people and sharing daily life with them … living for yourself and family and not others — RVing gives you that — the freedom, the choice.”

RVing can help you live more simply.

Owning things is a huge part of the American Dream. Part of the blueprint involves buying a home so you can then buy stuff to put in your home. Some of the stuff is useful and some — probably more than you realize — is useless.

In fact, instead of owning your material things, your material things start to own you. My husband and I felt that way as we started to purge our belongings. It’s amazing how you can fill an entire garage (and then some) with objects you never use!

Marissa and Nathan Moss sold their house and took up full-time RV living to spend more time as a family.

Marissa Moss from Less Junk, More Journey says:

“Our whole lives the world has told us we needed more. More money, more house, more cars, more toys to be happy and successful. But what if the world was wrong? What if actually having less gave you more? More time, more memories, more life, more freedom. People are discovering the RV lifestyle to be the vessel to achieve this goal. A life of simplicity and adventure worth living!”

Not everyone is going to leave everything behind to live a different American Dream, and not everyone has to. For some owning an RV is the American Dream. It’s different for everyone, but there’s something about being on the open road in an RV that inspires universal feelings of freedom.

RVs support an active and balanced lifestyle.

The Hebards share their fifth wheel with their cat and two dogs.

Many people are searching for a more fulfilling life — and quite a few are finding that RVing is the answer.

Laura and John Hebard from Hebard’s Travel explain that, “many [people] are seeking ways to unwind and unplug more often. Since we’ve been traveling, we’ve forged stronger bonds and friendships emerged that felt more healthy and hearty.”

Among its 2017 business indicators, the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) reported that RV owners said that RV travel “enables them to experience nature and outdoor activities and enjoy quality family time.”

Audrey Callahan and her husband started their RV adventure in August 2017.

Owners referenced stronger family bonds, healthier eating and comforts like sleeping in their own beds as benefits of RV travel. It’s not a stretch to correlate a healthy lifestyle with RVing. It makes sense that people who spend time outdoors, cook at home and spend quality time with their families would be drawn to RV travel.

This aligns with what singer/songwriter and full-time RVer Audrey Callahan told me:

“In the [four] months that we’ve been RVing we’ve visited more beautiful destinations than all of the last couple of years combined. This kind of freedom is addicting and I can see why it has attracted so many adventure seekers of all ages.”

RVing is more cost-effective than other forms of travel.

Kelly Beasley lives a nomadic life out of her 24′ Crossroads Slingshot travel trailer.

Kelly Beasley (a.k.a. RV Chickadee), co-owner of Camp Addict, thinks that “RV sales are up because hotel and flight costs are becoming prohibitively expensive. We’re talking about thousands of dollars, even up to tens of thousands of dollars for a family of [four] to fly and stay in a hotel. RVing is a much more frugal and, oftentimes, a more fulfilling experience.”

A 2014 cost comparison by the RVIA showed that a family of four can save up to 62 percent on vacation costs by choosing an RV (even when you account for the costs of ownership, maintenance and fuel). Couples can save 11 to 48 percent. According to the report: “Even when fuel prices rise, more than 80 percent of RV owners say their RV vacations cost less than other forms of travel.”

I can confirm that traveling in my RV for months on end is way cheaper than my two-week honeymoon to Europe. (Okay, so I don’t get to eat Italian gelato — but I do get to have s’mores over the open flame with my RV friends!)

Getting internet in an RV has gotten a lot easier.

If you follow RV bloggers who have been around for a while, like Technomadia, they write about how mobile internet was not much of an option when they started out. Limited access to the internet was a barrier for many prospective RVers who wanted or needed to be online.

Sean and Julie Chickery of are exploring the country in their RV.

Today, there’s a growing remote workforce thanks to improving cell data and access to the internet. Julie Chickery of Chickery’s Travels says that RVing is growing as a movement because “technology has allowed people to work remotely. This in turn makes it possible for people to travel extensively while maintaining a stable income.”

Full-timers Lisa and Dan Brown live in their rig with two feline companions.

Lisa Brown from Always on Liberty elaborates on how technology is changing the way we work: “We can take our jobs outside now; beyond boundaries and walls that others dictate. Where else can we be our own boss at life while enjoying [the] freedom to come and go as we please?”

It’s no coincidence that as these trends increase, so too does the desire to work, travel and even live in an RV.

According to the RVIA: “RV manufacturers are offering innovative new products that offer an optimal mix of size, amenities and price for today’s budget-conscious consumers. Manufacturers are producing lightweight trailers and smaller, fuel-efficient motorhomes. Green technologies such as solar panels and energy efficient components are appearing on an increasing number of RV models.”

There’s an RV solution for nearly everyone and every situation.

RVing communities bring RVers together.

I made some lifelong friends at an Xscapers convergence at Quartzsite, AZ.

If you talk to someone who’s been RVing for a really long time, say twenty or more years, they talk about how isolating the experience was back then. Without internet or Facebook groups, it was pretty challenging to have spontaneous meetups. Unless you planned well in advance with friends and family, you might not see another RVer outside of an RV park.

Now there are whole communities of RVers that are an instant message away. These are communities of like-minded people who love the travel lifestyle and understand the unique experiences that RVing offers. (You can read my article on how to make friends on the road here.)

Eric Odom, the producer of the RV Nomads film, says that “there are now so many of us coming into the lifestyle at the same time [and] we have this huge community developing where we all share a common thread in our lives. We all deal with similar mechanical issues, we all share the same passion for the outdoors and we all understand why we’re unplugging.”

If there’s any doubt about RVing as a movement, look at the Xscapers “Annual Bash,” a yearly convergence of RVers in Quartzite, AZ. We went to our first Bash in 2017, which was attended by roughly 150 people. In 2018, they expect 400. If you there was an Annual Bash stock on the market, I’d buy it right now.

Social media has had a big influence on RVing

Social media hashtags like #Vanlife and #RVlife have popularized the idea of mobile living.

I’m convinced that social media has had a huge role in the rise of the RV movement. I couldn’t actually find strong data on the correlation between increasing RV sales and the proliferation of #RVLife and #VanLife hashtags on social media. But c’mon, it’s pretty obvious!

There has to be a connection between the RV movement and the sheer volume of RV YouTube channels and slick RV Instagram accounts. I know because people tell me directly. I hear things like, “Less Junk, More Journey inspired me to go RVing,” or “I was at my desk scrolling through Instagram and thinking: that’s what I want to do!”

And I get it. Sure, my husband and I made the decision to go RVing on our own, but it wasn’t long before we were watching YouTube channels, reading blogs and learning everything we could in the vast internet sea about RVing.

Full-Time Freedom Week was a big success!

All that social media consumption influenced our decisions — it helped us figure out which RV to buy, which RVing groups to join and which campground memberships to have.

At the end of 2017, some RV blogger friends and I put together a live Facebook event called “Full-Time Freedom Week,” a week of RV education, inspiration and entertainment. Over 1,000 people RSVP’d to the event and raved about how inspired they were to run out and buy an RV of their own.

If that’s not a movement, I don’t know what is.

The RV movement is expected to grow.

What really strikes me about the RV movement is how RVing truly appeals to all ages. It’s not only for retirees or hardcore outdoor adventurers.

CNBC reported that in 2017, millennials (people born between the early 1980s and early 2000s) pushed sales to record highs. The RVIA reported that RV sales are expected to grow as aging baby boomers enter the age range in which RV ownership has historically been highest.

In other words, every generation loves to RV! How many other movements can claim that?

Me and my husband, striking a pose in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.

I hope this article about the RV movement has inspired you. Maybe you’re already rushing out the door now to go check out RVs for sale or for rent (psst … Campanda has a great selection).

Hope to see you on the road!

The RV movement is a huge opportunity for savvy RV owners. If you don’t live in yours full time, consider renting your RV, camper or trailer to someone looking to experience the joys of the open road! (You can make some serious money, too.)

2017 RV Tax Deductions

Taxes pave our roads and keep our national parks pristine (two things near and dear to RVers’ hearts). They’re also a major pain in the wallet.

But there’s good news for RV owners! Uncle Sam offers some generous tax deductions for RV owners. Keep reading to find out about how your RV can save you money on taxes in tax year 2017.

Note: We’re not accountants or financial experts. (If we were, we’d advise ourselves to spend less on late-night Amazon purchases. But what can you do?) If you have any questions, we recommend that you speak with an accountant or tax specialist who can help you unravel the specifics of your personal financial situation.

That being said, here’s what we think you should know about RV tax deductions:

RV As A Second Home

Unlike the interest on other loans (like auto, credit card and discretionary loans) home mortgage interest is considered a qualified tax deduction. And so is RV loan interest — if your RV meets certain specifications!

A camper or RV meets the IRS definition of a second home if it meets the following criteria:

You can sleep in it.

You can cook food in it.

It has a bathroom.

Or, as IRS Publication 936 puts it:

“A home includes a house, condominium, cooperative, mobile home, house trailer, boat, or similar property that has sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities.”

If you bought your rig using an RV loan and it meets the requirements above, you can deduct your interest payments on your taxes.

And yes, if you live in your motorhome full-time, your RV qualifies for primary home ownership tax deductions.

Does a the vehicle I use to tow my RV qualify for this tax deduction?

No, your truck doesn’t count as a second home, no matter how much time you spend in it.

In fact, under the newly passed tax reform bill, towable RVs themselves are ineligible for the tax deduction we just mentioned.

The Tax Reform Bill Removes The Tax Benefit For Towable RVs

Overall, the tax reform bill is expected to benefit the RV industry, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

However, the new bill replaced the previous wording that allowed for towable RVs with the phrase “any self-propelled vehicle designed for transporting persons or property on a public street, highway, or road.”

In other words, owners of travel trailers and fifth wheels will no longer be able to write off their RV loan interest as a tax deduction.

Bummer.

Thankfully, the old rules still apply for the 2017 tax year, so owners of travel trailers, fifth wheels or other towable RVs may still be able to write off their RV loan interest this year.

More good news: If you bought your towable RV in 2017, you may also qualify for a sales tax deduction.

RV Sales Tax Deduction

If you recently purchased an RV, you may be eligible for a sales tax deduction — yes, even if you paid in cash and don’t pay loan interest (look at you go!).

The IRS has an online tool to help you calculate your sales tax deduction.

Of course, you can’t deduct a tax that you never paid, so if you bought your RV in a state without a sales tax, your purchase won’t qualify for this deduction. Only five states do not have a sales tax:

Alaska

Delaware

Montana

New Hampshire

Oregon

Tax Deductions For Business Expenses

If you use your RV for business or work out of your RV on a regular basis, you may be able to write off your business expenses.

There are tons of tax deductions available to small business owners, including your home office, office supplies, insurance premiums, mileage and travel.

Tax Benefits For Renting Out Your RV

Renting out your RV on a marketplace like Campanda is a great way to earn extra income. It can also help you out around tax time.

If you rented your RV out this year, you may be able to deduct expenses like depreciation, insurance, maintenance and repairs.

More RV Tax Write Offs

Your RV may qualify you for even more tax deductions.

Every person’s financial situation is different, so we highly recommend that you check with a tax specialist or accountant (because again, we’re neither of those things) to find out where and how your RV can you save money on your 2017 taxes.

If you find yourself owing money to Uncle Sam:

Consider renting out your RV for an easy — and safe! — source of extra income in 2018:

Click Here To Rent Your RV

It’s 2018. If you’re not already using services like Airbnb and Uber, you’ve certainly heard of them. Your neighbors rented out their cabin last summer. Your friends stayed in a stranger’s home in Florida for a week. Your kids consider taxis an antiquated form of transportation, almost as outdated as the horse-and-buggy.

Airbnb and Uber are prime examples of the sharing economy at work. With Airbnb, homeowners can rent out spare rooms and whole properties to travelers. The owners make money and their guests get a cozy and affordable place to stay. With Uber, drivers earn money by renting out a seat in their car and a little bit of their time, while passengers get a cheap and efficient way to travel from point A to B.

Everybody Benefits

A couple decades ago, the idea of lending your property to a stranger might have seemed crazy. But in fact, the concept isn’t new at all. It’s based on bartering, a type of trade in which people exchange goods and services without the use of money (as in, I’ll give you five carrots for three apples and a pear).

Like bartering, the sharing economy is based around the idea of mutual benefit — sharing something we value with other people in exchange for something else we value. Since we’re living in the age of consumerism and landlords don’t like being paid in carrots, the “something else we value” is money.

In the case of RV sharing, a renter gives an RV owner a little bit of their money in exchange for a little bit of time in their underused vehicle.

It’s really not that different from traditional vacation rentals. Except that it’s an exchange between two like-minded people, instead of a transaction between company and consumer. When done right, it creates an environment where everybody wins — and is especially welcome in an industry like travel, where gigantic companies typically reap the highest rewards.

How Campanda Fits In

Campanda is similar to Airbnb (and VRBO and HomeAway, etc.), except that we specialize in RV rentals. Like those other companies, Campanda is a peer-to-peer marketplace. We don’t own a fleet of RVs. Instead, we connect RV enthusiasts with everyday RV owners looking to get more out of their vehicles.

We allow RV owners to make money by renting out their vehicles to people who want to experience the RV life without the expense and commitment of full-time RV ownership. This can include city dwellers without driveways of their own, families looking to test out a vehicle for future purchase and retirees who have decided that owning and maintaining an RV no longer makes sense for their lifestyle.

Why Companies Like Campanda Are Important

So why, if the sharing economy is about connecting people, should you use a company like Campanda as a middleman?

For the same reasons why you’d lend a book to a friend-of-a-friend but likely wouldn’t hand it off to a stranger in a coffee shop. Or why you’ll happily take a taxi but probably wouldn’t trust someone advertising $10 car rides with a cardboard sign. It’s a matter of trust, accountability and safety.

Campanda is able to offer insurance, handle payments securely and set community rules. We also allow users to create online reviews (a powerful form of peer-to-peer accountability) which are visible to all. At Campanda, we also have experienced customer service personnel on hand to answer questions and provide assistance to both owners and renters, ensuring peace of mind for everyone involved.

What The Sharing Economy Means For RV Owners

It’s natural to be skeptical of disruptive new technologies and systems — especially when they impact the way we exchange money. But the sharing economy is no longer novel, and skeptics are realizing that it’s not just a fad. Peer-to-peer rentals are here to stay.

The sharing economy is an incredible opportunity for RV owners looking to make the most out of their investment. It puts owners in touch with like-minded RV enthusiasts who might otherwise not have access to an RV, or who would normally have to go through corporate companies offering sterile models and limited services at sky-high rates.

Best of all, it’s a chance to earn money on your own terms — without the effort or hustle that’s traditionally required of enterprising property owners.

Airstream has been in business since 1931. The Silver Bullet is still considered a piece of classic Americana and a timeless buy that is as dependable as it is practical.

A lot of effort goes into crafting these unique trailers — 320 man-hours per trailer to be exact. It takes two to three months for an Airstream to go through the entire manufacturing process from the time the company receives the order. At full capacity, the company can produce 50 Airstreams a week.

The fact that approximately 65% of all Airstream trailers are still operational today is a testament to the company’s commitment to lasting quality.

We wanted to find out more about the iconic Airstream, so we connected with their Vice President of Sales of Airstream, Justin Humphreys, to find out what the future holds for Airstream and their fans.

<h2Kindly introduce yourself.

I’m Justin Humphreys, VP of Sales at Airstream. I manage all sales and service functions of the company, as well as all customer-facing aspects of our organization.

How has RVing culture changed in the last 20 years in your opinion, if at all?

For customers, the culture has changed considerably in terms of communications. Technology has made it easier to communicate than ever before. Airstream forums, blogs, owner’s groups, etc. allow RVers to connect online at their fingertips with smartphones, tablets, and laptops any time of day.

Twenty years ago, the RV community would get together and connect through rallies. The rallies would offer seminars, display new products and offer social events.

Today, an RVer can do all those things from the comfort of their own home or RV by going online. This has affected the culture — we’re seeing more small groups traveling together and not as many large rallies. This doesn’t mean the rallies have stopped altogether, but they have certainly gotten smaller.

Airstream has been growing every year. How has the company changed to manage its growth?

It’s a balancing act of adding people and improving processes to deal with the growth. We’ve been lucky to add people from both inside and outside the industry, giving us different perspectives and experiences to draw from. Airstream has also invested in technologies to improve efficiencies during this growth.

What are the touring coaches?

Touring coaches are what the RV industry terms “class B” models. This type of product is a completed van that an RV manufacturer will then up-fit into an RV. With other motor homes, the box is built by the RV manufacturer – whereas the body of a class B van is built by the chassis provider, in our case, Mercedes-Benz.

Customers like the idea of a smaller motor home that’s fuel efficient and will fit in an average sized parking space. Additionally, because the body is built on an auto manufacturer, like Mercedes, they can enjoy the many technologies a car has to offer, like front and side airbags, collision avoidance and blind spot sensors.

Although Airstream is $15,000 to $20,000 more than the average class B van, we are the number one selling model in the United States – with more than one in every five B-vans sold in the U.S. being an Airstream. We love this business and it has created additional jobs for our company.

Can you talk a little more about your partnership with Mercedes Benz?

Airstream had to be certified by Mercedes in order to build an RV on one of their vans. We work closely with Mercedes to ensure we’re serving our mutual customers the best we can. They often invite us to meetings to share new technologies or products. It’s a great relationship and we like how they remain customer-centric after the sale.

What’s the most innovative way you’ve seen an Airstream used before?

That’s a tough question! I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world and being stunned at the creativity people have in using their Airstreams. From hotel rooms in downtown Melbourne, Australia to astronaut quarantine units at NASA, the list is long and impressive!

One of my recent favorites was a marketing trailer for Pop-Tarts (something I loved as a kid). They had fake Pop Tarts on top of the Airstream making it look like a silver toaster. It was brilliant.

Any inside scoops about new products or ideas that are in the pipeline that you could talk about?

Not if I want to keep my job! I can tell you this – we see the fleet size of tow vehicles in the U.S. getting smaller rather than bigger over the next 20 years. We also see millennials entering the market and wanting a travel trailer for their generation. We’re working on products that focus on both of these dynamics – smaller crossovers and younger buyers.

Our core line is ready for the current wave of Baby Boomers, which are storming into the RV lifestyle. The Boomers are a huge group of people with 11,000 of them turning our prime buying age every day for the next 19 years. We’re constantly trying to find the best way to keep this group buying Airstreams while also developing products for the next wave of Generation X and the Millennials behind them. It sure keeps us busy.

Hi, Matt! Can you tell us a little about myCampsiteReview.com?

I think it’s important for campers to understand that there are plenty of highly-rated campgrounds out there, with some pretty bad individual campsites.

That’s where myCampsiteReview.com is handy — unlike on most campsite directories that only rate the campground as a whole, on myCampsiteReview.com each individual campsite is rated and those ratings are used to give the campground its overall score.

Before you reserve your site, check to see if someone has reviewed it. Maybe it’s too sloped, or has a tree positioned in an awkward spot. Maybe you can hear highway noise from this particular campsite, or maybe the garbage bins are right next door and you can smell them on a hot day.

We hope that when campers share their great reviews, it helps others make informed decisions on where they should book next. We hope that when campers share their not-so-good reviews, it helps campground owners see areas where they should improve their facilities and services so that campers get the value they deserve when they book their camping vacations.

Tell us more about the campsite reviews. Where does that information come from?

Currently, we list as much information as we can and ask that campground owners claim their directory listing and fill out the rest. You can typically find the campground’s address and phone number, mapped location email and website addresses.

For directory listings that have been claimed by the campground owner, you’ll find a lot more, including the number of sites, fees, nearby attractions, events and featured campground activities.

The best information lies within the campsite reviews that are written by our large network of campers. Here’s where you’ll find the unbiased, first-hand opinions of folks who have stayed. You can see the camp date, a photo of the individual campsite and pros and cons. The reviewer will select a rating between 1 and 5 for privacy, location, size, quality and facilities.

What is glamping?

Glamping means different things to different people. On the surface, the term combines glamour with camping.

Some people might consider glamping staying in a fancy canvas tent with a four-poster bed, luxurious linens and hardwood floors. To others, it means staying in an unusual accommodation, like an old, converted bus or tree house. And to others, it might just mean camping with a few extra items available to help buff some of the rustic edges of a traditional campsite.

To me, glamping is all about making your stay in the outdoors as comfortable as you can, without taking away from the natural beauty that surrounds you.

What role do RVs play in camping?

RVs play a massive role in camping. What I see is that RVs offer a large group of campers the chance to experience camping, with the comforts and conveniences of home.

A young family might not have all of the camping equipment required or a car that can carry all of their baby’s gear and camping gear. A great way to deal with this is to rent an RV with plenty of room for everyone and everything!

RVs also offer the retired camper an opportunity to travel the country and meet make many new friends later in life. The camping community is wide and very accepting.

How do you see the future of camping?

Camping definitely hasn’t reached its heyday. As more and more people find their lives full of stress from their jobs and homes, camping seems to be the natural fit to escape from the usual routine and find some relaxation.

I think that as time goes on, we’ll start to see a real split in the types of camping available. There will be some campers who will still be looking to completely disconnect from their normal lives, leave the smartphones and gadgets behind for a few days and recharge their carbon-based batteries.

And then there will be a larger group of campers who are looking to experience the great outdoors with their personal technology and the comforts of home to give them a chance to relax, but stay connected.

Are the most popular campsites always the best?

Interesting question. We’ve got plenty of popular campgrounds listed on myCampsiteReview.com, but I’m not sure if that means that they are great places to camp, or if they’ve just become sort of, legendary over time, through word of mouth and family tradition.

I’d like to see more people taking chances on lesser known parks and campgrounds. There are plenty of great, not-so-well-known campgrounds listed with us. I hope folks take the opportunity to search them out!
