It happens so often that it feels like a cliché: A couple retires, buys an RV with all the bells and whistles, makes grand plans to take their rig to the lake every other weekend (at least!) — and then spends the next few years lamenting that their RV spends most of its weekends in the driveway, depreciating in value with every second.

Underused RVs Cost Money

If your RV is sitting in the driveway or storage, it’s probably costing you money.

There are plenty of good reasons to buy an RV. If you’re reading this article, you probably don’t need to hear them. But what happens when real life gets in the way of your retirement fantasy? What happens when your motorhome or trailer spends more time in storage than it does on the road?

Depreciation, for one thing — the value of an RV starts plummeting the minute you drive it off the lot.

But depreciation doesn’t mean financing gets any cheaper. Unless you shelled out and paid for your rig in full, you’re probably making hefty monthly loan payments. When you can’t use your RV often, making regular loan and insurance payments can feel like a real injustice.

Finally, there’s the fact that like any other vehicle, an RV that sits idle for long periods of time costs more to repair.

Renting Your RV Is A Safe & Easy Source Of Income

But for all the extra costs, you can’t bring yourself to sell your vehicle. You may not make it to the lake every weekend, but you haven’t given up your Grand Canyon dreams just yet. Besides, the grandkids might want to go camping this summer instead of playing video games (we can all dream, right?).

Just because you can’t use your RV as often as you like doesn’t mean you want to give it up.

So why not rent your RV out? A few years ago this idea might have seemed totally crazy. But the rise of peer-to-peer rental marketplaces like Airbnb, Vrbo and Homeaway has taken some of the crazy out of renting your personal property to strangers.

Companies like Campanda have made the process simple, safe and surprisingly lucrative. RV owners can rent their underused vehicles out for hundreds of dollars a night, offsetting many of the costs of ownership.

And thanks to the way our online platform operates, owners have control over when and to whom they rent their vehicle. Essentially, you now have the option to operate your own small-scale RV rental business with the rig that’s been rusting in your driveway.

The income you earn from renting your RV can be used to make insurance or loan payments, cover maintenance costs or fund your next road trip. And yes, we offer comprehensive RV rental insurance and roadside assistance — because renting out your RV should be an easy way to earn money, not rack up pricey repairs.

Other Financial Reasons To Rent Your RV

There are less obvious financial benefits, too:

Renting your RV could put a smile on your face when tax season rolls around.

RVs that get regular “exercise” stay in better shape and generally cost less to repair. In some ways, renting out your vehicle out is sort of like hiring a dog walker for your luxury Class A — you can’t take her out as often as she needs, so you find someone you trust to do the work for you. The difference is that in the RV scenario, you are the one getting paid!

Tax season reveals some other surprising benefits to renting out your RV. You may actually be able to deduct expenses like depreciation, insurance, maintenance and repairs on your federal taxes. Read more about RV tax deductions here, and check with your accountant to find out where and how your RV can save you money on your taxes — the answers may surprise you!

RVing Is About Freedom

The money you earn could help fund your own next RV vacation!

Finally, RVing isn’t just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. RVers value things like fresh air, fireside conversations with friends and family, and the freedom to travel wherever the road takes you.

The people who would rent your RV share these values but usually don’t have the space or desire to commit to full-time ownership (or they’re traveling from a far distance to visit a nearby national park, for example). If you can’t use your RV, why not share the joys of RVing with a fellow enthusiast who can? They’ll thank you for the memories — and you’ll put extra cash in your pocket!

RVing is about freedom. That’s why Campanda gives you the freedom to rent your motorhome, camper or trailer the way you want. Name your price, pick your dates and choose your renters — it’s your RV, after all!

By Liz Wilcox

Woohoo! Your RV is officially listed on Campanda. Now it’s time to start thinking about your customers —who they are what their ideal RV rental looks like. Then you can make a few tweaks to ensure that your rig will stand out in a crowd.

Couples are one of the biggest and best groups of RV rental customers out there. Creating a listing that will appeal to couples will help make your RV rental business more profitable.

Check out the following tips to make your RV listing more appealing to couples:

1. Take LOTS of high-quality pictures.

This is my number one tip and absolutely essential to getting your RV rental business off the ground.

Having good pictures will automatically make your listing stand out against the rest.

What makes this a good photo? It’s well-lit, the RV is out in nature and the photographer has stepped back far enough that you can see the whole vehicle.

Good photographs require the right lighting, equipment and staging. Now, this doesn’t mean that you need a professional photographer or even a fancy camera. But you do need to use the best camera available to you. A fairly new cell phone can do the trick, but if you have a friend with a decent digital camera, that’s even better!

The first image on your listing should be an exterior shot of your RV. Nailing this photo is going to bring more people to your listing — and ultimately earn you more money.

Consider going the extra mile and setting your rig up in nature or at the local campground. This will help your potential renter really see themselves enjoying your RV rental like they would on their trip.

Here are some rookie photography tips for your RV:

Wider angles are more visually appealing. Step back from your RV until the whole vehicle fits in the frame.

Hold your camera horizontally rather than vertically (portrait mode).

Try taking a few pictures from low or high angles (not eye-level). This can make for a more unique picture and often helps a space seem larger.

Natural lighting from the sun looks best. When taking interior photos, avoid using your camera’s flash — it creates dark shadows and usually gives images a creepy vibe.

Clean your RV before taking photos! No one wants to see dirty socks or mops lying around.

Aim to take 20 photos using these tips. Then go through and pick the best 10 or so and you’re bound to have a more appealing listing.

2. Offer extra amenities.

Offering to include a bike rack (or even bikes if you have them) can be a big plus for active couples traveling too far to bring their own.

Sure, all RVs are exciting and interesting in their own special way. But if you want your unit to be irresistible to couples, consider sweetening the deal with a few inexpensive extras.

Many couples are renting an RV to get out in nature. They want to take an active vacation, which means they’ll be on the lookout for an RV that can accommodate their outdoor equipment.

Adding a bike rack to your RV is a great way to enhance your rig, but adding some beach cruisers or mountain bikes is even better! Boasting extra amenities is a great way to get more people booking your RV rental.

You could also consider kayaks, stand-up paddle boards or walking sticks depending on your location. The best part? You can offer these things as add-ons for an extra fee!

A cheap set of wine glasses is an easy way make your RV couple-friendly.

Even active couples are going to look forward to some lazy moments in your RV. You don’t need to go full-blown romantic, but make sure your rig is cozy:
Add a nice area rug, a set of wine glasses and lots of pillows to make your listing appeal to couples.

You may also want to consider including a small outdoor grill in your listing and some outdoor games like Ladderball so that a couple can imagine themselves socializing with friends at the RV park.

3. Write a great description.

Once you’ve hooked a potential renter with a high-quality exterior photo, you’ve got to reel them in with a good description.

Highlight the features that are important to couples here. This is where you really answer the question: Why should a couple rent my RV?

Does your rig have a comfortable living room area? Picture all the ways a couple can use that feature: They can lounge around after a long hike. They could also invite friends over for dinner or for a comfy spot around the TV for the big game. Be sure to include this and other features in your description.

Highlight the best features of your RV. Make it a great one and people will be much more likely to click to learn more about your rig.

Just think of it this way: the job of the first sentence is to get someone to read the second sentence.

4. Consider allowing pets.

Lots of couples have furry companions. Consider allowing pets into your rig. It may seem scary at first, but it can greatly increase your visibility on the Campanda website and ultimately lead to higher profits!

Lots of people like RVing because it lets them travel with their pets instead of finding a sitter.

You can charge a small additional security deposit and cleaning fee for renters who want to bring their cat or dog along. And of course, feel free to ask your renters questions about the pet they plan to bring along to make sure they’re suitable for RV life.

Put “pet-friendly” in your description to make sure renters notice this amazing feature about your RV!

Couples are generally fantastic renters. And each year, more and more are discovering a love for RVing. Appealing to couples, young and old, is great way to make your RV rental business a successful one!

Now that you know how to make your RV more appealing to couples, why not spruce up your RV rental listing on Campanda?

By Liz Wilcox

When I tell people I want to rent my RV with Campanda, they tend to react by giving me a puzzled look and saying something like: “Are you crazy? That seems risky.”

As a full-time RVer, my rig is my home. This means that I have so much more to lose than most owners out there. But I’ve done my research, I’m informed about Campanda’s policies and I feel confident about them. I also owe a lot to peer-to-peer RV rentals — after all, it’s how I became an RVer myself (you can read the full story here)!

After weighing all my options, I’m confident that renting out my RV is a great idea. Here’s why:

I’ve rented an RV myself.

Renting an RV changed my life — and made me want to return the favor.

Renting an RV was one of the best decisions of my life! In fact, it led me to where I am today as a full-time RVer.

I loved the hospitality of the owner and the fact that she was willing to open up her rig to my little family and show me just how amazing camping can be. I was really impressed by her low rate in a beach town as well.

And as for me? The one renting the RV?

I was completely respectful of her travel trailer. The camper was personalized, making it easy for me to remember that I was a guest and I acted as such. And as is typical in a peer-to-peer marketplace, when the rental period was over I went online and gave her a great review for a great experience.

Campanda’s policies give me peace of mind.

If you’ve been researching RV rentals, you may feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that is (and isn’t) out there.

After LOTS of research, I decided Campanda was the best fit for me and my RV.

“How much does it cost to list?”

“Who takes care of insurance?”

“Is it my problem if my motorhome breaks down 200 miles into a renter’s road trip?”

I’ve had the chance to talk to Campanda directly, but their policies and answers to these questions are also available on the Campanda website.

And I trust Campanda because they are the largest peer-to-peer RV rental marketplace in the world. Founded in 2013, they have over 26,000 RVs for rent in 42 countries. I know their policies have been tried and fine-tuned by their global customer base.

Here are some of my favorite things about listing on Campanda, as an RV owner myself:

No-Pressure Listing Policy

There is never any cost to list my RV and I get to decide who I rent it out to.

I love this because there is no pressure. I can post my RV and get a feel for the people wanting to rent it — and I can say no to people without any negative consequence. If there was a fee in place, I would feel a certain amount of stress to rent in order to “make up” the price I was paying to list. But with Campanda this isn’t the case.

24/7 Roadside Assistance

An RV is a vehicle and vehicles break down. There is no way I would rent out my motorhome without roadside assistance. No one should.

Campanda provides truly comprehensive roadside assistance — so I can rest easy when my RV is on the road.

Campanda boasts the only true 24/7 roadside assistance coverage on the market. They’ve partnered with Nation Safe Drivers, a premier provider of 24-hour towing and roadside assistance for over 50 years. This means that when I rent my RV, I can relax knowing that it is fully covered in the event of a breakdown.

Being a newbie on the road is stressful. But renting out your beloved rig to a newbie on the road is even more stressful!

I love knowing that Campanda’s inclusive definition of roadside assistance covers both my RV and the renters with 24/7 emergency towing, fuel and supply delivery, sewage assistance, tire service, battery service and even lockout service!

And all of this is at no cost to me, the owner!

Flexible Insurance Options

Accidents happen. Not often, but it’s impossible not to worry. Thankfully, there’s this amazing thing called insurance.

Campanda offers the best insurance coverage in the industry.

Campanda has great insurance options for me, the RV owner. I can:

Use their policy.

Use my policy.

Require renters to secure their own binder coverage.

I love this because it puts me in control. I can weigh the pros and cons of each option and choose the one that’s right for me and my RV.

For me, Campanda’s insurance is the best fit. It is the industry’s most comprehensive coverage and provided to the owner at zero cost.

I really like that it covers physical damage to my RV up to the cash value or cost of repair. There is an extra peace of mind that comes with knowing I’m also covered for up to $1 million in liability. Finally, Campanda’s policy feature a low deductible of $1000, which is covered by the renter’s security deposit. This means I’ll never have to pay out of pocket if a claim must be made.

RV rentals are a good source of income.

There are many reasons RV owners should consider making their RV work for them. Depreciation, insurance payments and storage fees add up quickly. Even as a full-time RVer, the cost of RV life can be daunting and scary.

I consulted the calendar and took a look at all the times when my family and I are not in our motorhome: Thanksgiving, the Christmas season, extended vacations with family (like Spring Break), etc.

I know that the RV industry is booming and that the demand for RV rentals far outpaces supply.

Coincidentally, these seem to be the times when many people are looking to rent an RV for their own vacations. As a person who not only likes to save money but make money, I see a huge opportunity to capitalize on this demand.

Renting out my Class C motorhome for just a few weeks a year can help offset the interest I’m paying and the depreciation of the value of my rig. As someone who financed a 10-year-old RV, this is a huge incentive. I can only imagine how much I’d make if I didn’t live in it!

But why am I so certain that I’ll make money if I rent my RV on Campanda?

I follow the RV industry very closely. I know that it’s thriving like never before. Baby boomers and millennials alike love RVing and all it offers. The demand for RV rentals far exceeds the supply. This means it is an “owner’s market” where I can price competitively and reap the financial rewards.

I want to share my love of RVing.

I would love to help more families and RV enthusiasts get out on the road and into nature.

It’s not an understatement to say that renting an RV transformed my life. I honestly don’t know where I would be without that initial RV rental that put me on the path to full-time RVing.

And so I want to return the favor. It would make me feel so good to know that I helped someone experience the joy of camping in my sweet little home, even just for a weekend.

What about you? Are you ready to join me and list your RV?

2017 RV Tax Deductions

Taxes pave our roads and keep our national parks pristine (two things near and dear to RVers’ hearts). They’re also a major pain in the wallet.

But there’s good news for RV owners! Uncle Sam offers some generous tax deductions for RV owners. Keep reading to find out about how your RV can save you money on taxes in tax year 2017.

Note: We’re not accountants or financial experts. (If we were, we’d advise ourselves to spend less on late-night Amazon purchases. But what can you do?) If you have any questions, we recommend that you speak with an accountant or tax specialist who can help you unravel the specifics of your personal financial situation.

That being said, here’s what we think you should know about RV tax deductions:

RV As A Second Home

Unlike the interest on other loans (like auto, credit card and discretionary loans) home mortgage interest is considered a qualified tax deduction. And so is RV loan interest — if your RV meets certain specifications!

A camper or RV meets the IRS definition of a second home if it meets the following criteria:

You can sleep in it.

You can cook food in it.

It has a bathroom.

Or, as IRS Publication 936 puts it:

“A home includes a house, condominium, cooperative, mobile home, house trailer, boat, or similar property that has sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities.”

If you bought your rig using an RV loan and it meets the requirements above, you can deduct your interest payments on your taxes.

And yes, if you live in your motorhome full-time, your RV qualifies for primary home ownership tax deductions.

Does a the vehicle I use to tow my RV qualify for this tax deduction?

No, your truck doesn’t count as a second home, no matter how much time you spend in it.

In fact, under the newly passed tax reform bill, towable RVs themselves are ineligible for the tax deduction we just mentioned.

The Tax Reform Bill Removes The Tax Benefit For Towable RVs

Overall, the tax reform bill is expected to benefit the RV industry, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

However, the new bill replaced the previous wording that allowed for towable RVs with the phrase “any self-propelled vehicle designed for transporting persons or property on a public street, highway, or road.”

In other words, owners of travel trailers and fifth wheels will no longer be able to write off their RV loan interest as a tax deduction.

Bummer.

Thankfully, the old rules still apply for the 2017 tax year, so owners of travel trailers, fifth wheels or other towable RVs may still be able to write off their RV loan interest this year.

More good news: If you bought your towable RV in 2017, you may also qualify for a sales tax deduction.

RV Sales Tax Deduction

If you recently purchased an RV, you may be eligible for a sales tax deduction — yes, even if you paid in cash and don’t pay loan interest (look at you go!).

The IRS has an online tool to help you calculate your sales tax deduction.

Of course, you can’t deduct a tax that you never paid, so if you bought your RV in a state without a sales tax, your purchase won’t qualify for this deduction. Only five states do not have a sales tax:

Alaska

Delaware

Montana

New Hampshire

Oregon

Tax Deductions For Business Expenses

If you use your RV for business or work out of your RV on a regular basis, you may be able to write off your business expenses.

There are tons of tax deductions available to small business owners, including your home office, office supplies, insurance premiums, mileage and travel.

Tax Benefits For Renting Out Your RV

Renting out your RV on a marketplace like Campanda is a great way to earn extra income. It can also help you out around tax time.

If you rented your RV out this year, you may be able to deduct expenses like depreciation, insurance, maintenance and repairs.

More RV Tax Write Offs

Your RV may qualify you for even more tax deductions.

Every person’s financial situation is different, so we highly recommend that you check with a tax specialist or accountant (because again, we’re neither of those things) to find out where and how your RV can you save money on your 2017 taxes.

If you find yourself owing money to Uncle Sam:

Consider renting out your RV for an easy — and safe! — source of extra income in 2018:

By Liz Wilcox

You’ve listed your RV on Campanda and now you’re eager to start earning! One of the best ways to do this is to think about your renters — who they are and what they want from an RV rental — and then assess your rig and make a few small improvements to meet their needs.

Families are some of the most pleasant (and profitable!) renters out there. Optimizing your RV for family rentals is a great way to get your camper out of storage and onto the road.

Here is a list of tips to make your RV rental more appealing to families — and make you more money!

1. Start with a little RV makeover.

At the risk of stating the obvious, thoroughly clean your RV. Anything that you don’t intend for your renters’ use should be taken out of the RV. While it’s totally up to you how much you leave in your rig, you may want to consider leaving at least some amenities inside when renting to families. You can always offer these things as add-ons for an extra fee.

Linens

Towels

Pillows

Blankets

Kitchen supplies

Adding family-oriented items will also help make your listing successful:

Board games

Playing cards

Extra blankets

DVD player and a few movies

Outdoor camping games (think Ladderball or Cornhole)

Small grill

Camping chairs

These small steps will not only make your listing more appealing, but will allow you to charge a bit more as well. Win-win!

2. Describe your RV the right way.

Highlight the features of your RV that are important to a family.

Another feature families love is a separate sleeping area for the adults. Mention any doors that close off the master bedroom from the rest of the rig.

When you’re writing your description, imagine that you’re talking to a parent. What would you say to someone trying to take their kids to the campground for the first time?

Does your rig have an outdoor shower? Picture all the ways a family can use that feature: They can rinse the kids off after running around outside. It can also be great fun on a hot day. Be sure to include it in your description.

Can you think of any uncommon features in your unit? A lot of them were made with families in mind! A bathtub is a true asset to a family and should be included in your description if you have one. An outdoor kitchen is also highly valued, as are large slide outs or big storage areas.

3. Take the right photos.

Families are more likely to rent your RV if they can picture themselves living in it.

Nothing kills a rental listing faster than bad photos. Take a few good photos and give a beautiful visual of your RV and you should see great return on your investment.

Most articles out there will tell you to put everything away for photos. While this is great advice, it can be a good idea to add certain family-oriented items to your pictures.

For example, when taking a picture of kids’ sleeping areas, put one or two stuffed animals on the bed. This small act gives your rental listing a personal touch and makes it more appealing.

For families, go the extra mile and take a second picture. Put the awning out and set up any camping furniture included in your rental. Don’t forget to incorporate the outdoor games, too!

The kitchen is an important place for families to gather. Make sure you get a clear and wide shot of this area (taking the photo from a low angle can result in a better picture). Don’t forget to take a picture of the dining area as well.

The exterior photo is perhaps the most important image for any RV listing. It’s the first photo your renters will see, so make it a good one!

Get your RV into nature and set up a lovely shot. Turn the camera to ensure a landscape (horizontal) photo and step back as far as needed to get the entire RV in the shot. Remove any leaves and debris from the scene for a clean look.

4. Sweeten the deal.

There are some things that will make your listing irresistible to families.

Allowing pets is a great way to attract more renters.

Many families have a furry companion. If you are comfortable with it, allow for pets. In a renter’s mind, one of the greatest benefits of RVing is that they can bring Fido or Mittens along. Charge a small additional security deposit and cleaning fee to maximize your unit’s potential to make money while also appealing to many more renters.

You can also boast extra services. Offer to deliver a unit to a campground, especially if it is a travel trailer or 5th wheel. Many families prefer these units because they offer more space and storage, but have no way of transporting them. A delivery service will stand out from the crowd and allow you to add a simple flat fee to your rental.

It’s important to remember that families have a lot of working parts. While most owners require their renters to dump tanks and clean before returning, you can turn this into a profitable service. By giving the option to return the unit “as is” for a fee, you will turn a potential negative into a positive, making your RV listing unique and noteworthy.

Families are great customers. And every year, more and more families are looking towards the RV industry for their travel needs. Appealing to families is a great way to not only get your RV noticed, but to get it rented out again and again.

Your RV is awesome. You know it and we know it. But with so much competition from other Campanda owners, how do you convince prospective renters that your RV is “the one”?

Here at Campanda, we spend a lot of time talking with interested renters. They’ve told us first-hand just what it is they’re looking for in an RV rental.

Using renter feedback and owner success stories, we put together a list of 10 easy tips to help you maximize your earning potential, get great renter reviews and make sure your RV stands out in a crowd.

1. Photos, Photos, Photos

People like pretty pictures. This is especially true when it comes to online shopping, whether they’re spending money on a new coat or a vacation rental. We recommend that you take as many photos as possible.

Fun fact: RV owners who include four or more photos in their listing receive up to seven times more inquiries.

Make sure your RV is tidy and well lit when you take your photos.

To help potential renters really imagine themselves living in and enjoying your RV, make sure your photos are well lit and the space is tidy. And don’t worry too much about camera quality: Unless you’re using a Nokia flip-phone that you bought at a gas station, your mobile phone camera is probably fine.

Main Photo

You can also use photos to show renters details about your RV or extra amenities that you offer.

Your main photo should grab the renters’ interest. Make sure that the vehicle is clean and that the angle shows as much of the RV as possible.

Setting is important too — photographing your RV in nature will help renters imagine themselves there and inspire them to book.

Secondary Photos

Try to take photos from several angles.

While the main photo is supposed to attract renters’ attention, the rest of the photos should close the deal.

Try to show as many details about your RV as possible. Take pictures of the cabin, the bathroom, beds, driver’s seat and so on. Remember to take the photos when there is plenty of light.

2. Use Your Listing Title Wisely

One of the best ways to set your listing apart is to give it a catchy and descriptive title. Cut to the chase and communicate the things that make your RV special as early in your listing as possible.

Whether your RV is extra roomy, dog-friendly or boasts solar panels, putting these details in the title will help you catch the eye of a renter with specific wants and needs.

3. Provide As Much Detail As Possible

The more information you provide, the more comfortable renters will feel about booking your vehicle.

Put yourself in the renter’s shoes — think about all the little details you’d ask about if you were borrowing someone else’s vehicle. Does your RV come equipped with cooking utensils or linens? Do you have camping gear available to rent? Is there space in the cabinets for renters to store their own supplies?

The more accurate and honest you are, the more likely it is that your renters will walk away satisfied.

And don’t be afraid to have a little fun with your description. Tell renters what makes your RV special, whether that’s smooth handling on the road or the way the light comes through the curtains in the morning.

Tell your renters what you love about your RV.

4. Price Competitively

First, you have to know how much your RV is worth. Start by doing a little research. Look at similar rentals in your area — on <a href="http://Campanda.com, at local rental services and RV dealerships — to get an idea for what other owners are charging for vehicles like your own. Be realistic about what your RV is worth and you will be rewarded with more interested parties.

Pro tip: It’s often better to set the base price low and offer extras as optional add-ons. This will offer renters as much choice as possible while ensuring that your price stays competitive.

You can use Campanda to see what other owners in your area are charging for RVs similar to your own.

We also offer an earnings calculator for new owner accounts that will give you an earnings estimate based off of your vehicle’s make and year. You can use this estimate as a general guideline for pricing your listing.

For existing owner accounts, feel free to give us a call at (339) 707-7320. One of our customer support specialists will be happy to help you calculate your income potential.

5. Consider Seasonality

Winter is considered a low season for RVing in many parts of the country.

What is the most popular time to RV where you live? When do you see the most RVs on the road in your area? This is called the “high season” — the time (or times) of year when demand for RVs is highest. Conversely, a “low season” is the time of year when demand is lowest.

With Campanda, you can adjust the base price of your RV listing depending on the season. We recommend that you charge slightly more during the high season to take advantage of increased demand and offer a slight discount during the low season to stay competitive.

Similarly, you can also adjust the minimum rental length according to seasonality. Many owners like to increase the minimum rental length to a week or more during the high season.

You can adjust the nightly price of your RV to match seasonal demand.

6. Offer Extras — For A Price

Upselling works. Anything that might benefit your renters — coolers, camping chairs, tents, extra generators, etc. — you can offer as an add-on, either individually or as a package deal. These extras will attract more renters and increase your average earnings. Small things like extra linens can sometimes make a big difference.

You can set the base price low and charge extra for optional amenities and services.

Pro tip: People don’t like mileage restrictions. Most renters prefer to pay a little more upfront and have unlimited mileage on their trip. If you’re comfortable offering unlimited mileage for a fee, we highly recommend making this option available to your renters.

7. Ask Us About Direct Booking

Many of our most successful RV owners offer direct booking on their listings. Direct booking is a feature that enables renters to book your RV with a single click.

Direct booking allows renters to instantly book your RV without submitting an inquiry.

The direct booking feature shows renters that the RV owner is ready and willing to rent out their vehicle and is perfect for last-minute planners. Direct booking also speeds up the process for the owner, putting extra cash in your pocket more quickly.

The feature isn’t for everyone — if you’re listing your RV for the first time and are still on the fence about approving your first booking, you may want to hold off until you feel more confident. However, RV owners who do choose direct booking can look forward to more bookings and higher income in a shorter period of time.

To activate direct booking, simply give the Campanda team a call at (339) 707-7320. We’ll walk you through the setup and tell you how you can best manage the tool.

8. Make Insurance Simple

We could talk about our amazing RV rental insurance all day, but you’ve got an RV listing to get to. So we’ll save some time and lay it out straight: our insurance policy is free for owners (yes, really) and Campanda renters love it.

We’re proud to offer the most comprehensive coverage in the industry.

While we happily support RV owners who want to use their own insurance plan (make sure yours covers third party rentals — many don’t!) or require renters to secure their own binder as proof of coverage, the fact is that most renters don’t want to go through the hassle.

For many renters, having to secure their own insurance binder or go back and forth with an owner about insurance coverage can be a deal breaker. Campanda’s RV rental insurance option is the simplest way to ensure that your vehicle is fully covered without detracting from your listing’s appeal.

To learn more about our insurance option, see our Insurance FAQs.

9. Clean Your RV

Always clean your RV between rentals.

When you stay at a hotel, you expect the room to be cleaned between guests. Likewise, renters expect a clean and tidy RV.

A clean RV is an important part of a positive renter experience. And since happy renters leave better reviews, a clean RV also means more bookings for you and more money in your pocket.

You can set a cleaning fee in your listing. It’s up to you whether you outsource the job to a professional or do it yourself and pocket the cleaning fee as payment for your efforts.

10. Communicate

Be responsive. Whether you want to approve their inquiry or not, getting back to prospective renters as soon as possible is important — both for the renters’ experience and your own success.

That’s because on Campanda, renters give owners ratings. These ratings help others decide who they should rent from. When renters search for an RV on our website, listings from responsive owners appear higher in their search results, meaning those owners get more attention and make more money.

Communicating with your renters will earn you better reviews and more bookings.

Responding to renters as quickly as possible is a simple but important way to earn good reviews. It’s also a surefire way to maximize your earnings — owners who communicate with renters receive up to six times more bookings than owners who do not.

It’s 2018. If you’re not already using services like Airbnb and Uber, you’ve certainly heard of them. Your neighbors rented out their cabin last summer. Your friends stayed in a stranger’s home in Florida for a week. Your kids consider taxis an antiquated form of transportation, almost as outdated as the horse-and-buggy.

Airbnb and Uber are prime examples of the sharing economy at work. With Airbnb, homeowners can rent out spare rooms and whole properties to travelers. The owners make money and their guests get a cozy and affordable place to stay. With Uber, drivers earn money by renting out a seat in their car and a little bit of their time, while passengers get a cheap and efficient way to travel from point A to B.

Everybody Benefits

A couple decades ago, the idea of lending your property to a stranger might have seemed crazy. But in fact, the concept isn’t new at all. It’s based on bartering, a type of trade in which people exchange goods and services without the use of money (as in, I’ll give you five carrots for three apples and a pear).

Like bartering, the sharing economy is based around the idea of mutual benefit — sharing something we value with other people in exchange for something else we value. Since we’re living in the age of consumerism and landlords don’t like being paid in carrots, the “something else we value” is money.

In the case of RV sharing, a renter gives an RV owner a little bit of their money in exchange for a little bit of time in their underused vehicle.

It’s really not that different from traditional vacation rentals. Except that it’s an exchange between two like-minded people, instead of a transaction between company and consumer. When done right, it creates an environment where everybody wins — and is especially welcome in an industry like travel, where gigantic companies typically reap the highest rewards.

How Campanda Fits In

Campanda is similar to Airbnb (and VRBO and HomeAway, etc.), except that we specialize in RV rentals. Like those other companies, Campanda is a peer-to-peer marketplace. We don’t own a fleet of RVs. Instead, we connect RV enthusiasts with everyday RV owners looking to get more out of their vehicles.

We allow RV owners to make money by renting out their vehicles to people who want to experience the RV life without the expense and commitment of full-time RV ownership. This can include city dwellers without driveways of their own, families looking to test out a vehicle for future purchase and retirees who have decided that owning and maintaining an RV no longer makes sense for their lifestyle.

Why Companies Like Campanda Are Important

So why, if the sharing economy is about connecting people, should you use a company like Campanda as a middleman?

For the same reasons why you’d lend a book to a friend-of-a-friend but likely wouldn’t hand it off to a stranger in a coffee shop. Or why you’ll happily take a taxi but probably wouldn’t trust someone advertising $10 car rides with a cardboard sign. It’s a matter of trust, accountability and safety.

Campanda is able to offer insurance, handle payments securely and set community rules. We also allow users to create online reviews (a powerful form of peer-to-peer accountability) which are visible to all. At Campanda, we also have experienced customer service personnel on hand to answer questions and provide assistance to both owners and renters, ensuring peace of mind for everyone involved.

What The Sharing Economy Means For RV Owners

It’s natural to be skeptical of disruptive new technologies and systems — especially when they impact the way we exchange money. But the sharing economy is no longer novel, and skeptics are realizing that it’s not just a fad. Peer-to-peer rentals are here to stay.

The sharing economy is an incredible opportunity for RV owners looking to make the most out of their investment. It puts owners in touch with like-minded RV enthusiasts who might otherwise not have access to an RV, or who would normally have to go through corporate companies offering sterile models and limited services at sky-high rates.

Best of all, it’s a chance to earn money on your own terms — without the effort or hustle that’s traditionally required of enterprising property owners.

By Liz Wilcox

You’ve seen the ads on Facebook. You’ve heard the stories about people making money. There are even rumors going around that the demand is much higher than the supply. But should you actually rent out your RV?

It seems like a simple question, but I know it can be a difficult one. To help you make the decision that’s right for you, I’ve put together a list of five tell-tale signs that you’re ready to rent out your vehicle.

If you find yourself nodding “yes” to more than two of the points below, you’re ready to list your RV.

1. Your RV spends more time in storage than at the campground.

You bought your rig with the best intentions. You planned to visit every state park within 200 miles of home. The Good Sam rally schedule was hung on the refrigerator right away. Life was exciting!

But let’s face it, the only state park you’ve been to is the one 15 minutes from your house. And that schedule? It slipped under the fridge ages ago.

And so your RV sits. You’re reminded of this every time you drive past its storage facility or walk past the RV in the driveway. It stings a bit. After all, you have a big rig payment without all the big rig excitement. You do the math and woah! That RV of yours is parked 70 to 90 percent of the time.

It may be time to rent out your RV, my friend.

2. You’re interested in paying off your RV.

I mean, who isn’t?

People do not just casually buy RVs. The purchase is an art form. You daydream for months — possibly years. Armed with a budget and a floor plan, you marched into that dealership ready to make a deal. And you got that deal!

The RV is yours now, along with the financing.

Oh, the financing! With a 15-year loan, it seems the day will never come when you don’t have to make an RV payment.

But then you heard that the average Class A motorhome rents for over $200 per night. And if that’s true, you could easily start paying down that loan. All you would have to do is rent out your RV from time to time.

If you really want to pay the loan off quickly, turning your RV into a second income with Campanda is one of the fastest and easiest ways to do it.

3. The value of your RV is depreciating, and quickly.

Depreciation is a bad word in your household.

But just between you and me? Your RV is depreciating. Fast. From the moment you drove it off the lot, the RV’s worth started plummeting.

Harsh, I know. But here are the facts:

A quick internet search shows an RV is only worth half of its retail value by its sixth year. HALF!

Unless you own a rare or classic RV, your rig will likely never appreciate in value.

Your RV will only stop depreciating when its value is equal to the scrap value.

Ouch.

The stress of owning something worth less than its loan payment can be overwhelming. When you start renting your RV through Campanda, you can make enough income to cover what you lose in depreciation — and then some!

4. You see RVs everywhere.

Once you bought your RV, you started noticing other RVers on the road. And at church. And in the RV aisle at Walmart, your kid’s college graduation ceremony, the gas station line … if you’re tech savvy, you probably see them all over Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, too!

You get the point.

It’s impossible to ignore: America is in love with RVing.

5. You’re ready to take the leap.

Friends say you’re nuts. How could you just hand over the keys to your RV? Something that holds so much value? Something you owe so much money on? TO A COMPLETE STRANGER?!

Of course, those things have crossed your mind. The idea of renting your RV to some guy and his kids is (admittedly) scary. But you know of a secret weapon — and you are ready to use it to your advantage:
