RV trip planning can be fun and exciting. It can also be overwhelming. What should you pack, where should you go, what route should you take? Questions like these are just the beginning of what can feel like a daunting set of tasks. Luckily it’s Pinterest to the rescue!

Keep reading to find out how Pinterest could make your next RV rental even better.

What is Pinterest?

A good “pin” will have a well-crafted description explaining the image.

When Pinterest came onto the scene back in 2010, people used it to search for and save (“pin”) things like recipes and wedding dresses. If you loved scrapbooking then you were guaranteed to love Pinterest even more. It’s like a massive, online vision board with infinite possibilities of ideas.

If you haven’t logged in to Pinterest in a while (or ever) then you might be puzzled when I say that it’s also an amazing tool to plan road trips and vacations. It’s not just for cupcakes anymore!

When you click on a pin it will take you to the source of the content, like a website, where you can get more information.

Why Pinterest Is A Great Tool

Over the years Pinterest has evolved into a search engine. A search engine helps you locate information on the internet. Google is what everyone thinks of as the go-to search engine. But Pinterest is a powerful search engine too, which surprises people because they think it’s a social media platform like Facebook. It isn’t, and that distinction is important for a couple for reasons.

Although it’s a social platform, Pinterest functions like a search engine. That means you can use it to look up information and tips.

For consumers (aka RVers browsing the internet), it’s a place where you can search and find information. For example, let’s say you want to travel to Utah and see national parks. If you type “Utah National Parks,” you’ll to find a wealth of information.

For content creators (bloggers, companies, etc.) it’s a useful platform to share your content and drive traffic back to your site. Let’s say you’re a travel blogger who writes articles about national parks: If you write one about Utah and make a great visual pin, there’s a good chance that your pin (and therefore your article) could be found in a search.

How To Use Pinterest To Plan An RV Trip

So how exactly do you use Pinterest to plan a vacation? To get started, you’ll need set up a profile on Pinterest. This will enable you to set up “boards” where you can organize all the pins you collect. Think of boards like file folders or different pages in a scrapbook, each with its own category.

You can use Pinterest to search for travel inspiration and discover amazing destinations.

Here’s how a board works: Using the Utah national parks example, you would create a board called “Utah Travel Board.” Then, you’d search for terms that fit the type of trip you’re planning, such as:

Utah National Parks

Utah driving routes

Hiking in Utah

Utah RV Parks

After you’ve collected a bunch of images and resources about your destination, you can then search for other helpful information. For example, if you want ideas about what to pack, you could search for terms like “RV travel checklist,” “hiking gear” or “packing for RVing.”

You can find tons of RV resources on Pinterest, like helpful checklists and packing tips.

You can even look for awesome camping recipes by searching terms like “RV recipes,” “camping recipes,” “food for camping” and so on.

As you discover new pins, you can keep adding them to your board. Over time you’ll collect a wide range of pins that you can refer to as you plan — all in one place!

(As a side note, Utah has some truly awesome National Parks. Check out this article for my favorite hikes while RVing, including Bryce Canyon in Utah.)

Using Pinterest Long-Term

You can also create multiple boards for different categories. For example, if you plan to take multiple trips, you could categorize your boards. This could mean one for each destination, or you could set up boards like this:

North America Travel

Route Planning

RV Parks

RV Gear

RV Cooking & Recipes

This way, whenever you plan a new trip, you can consult your boards and look at the pins that relate to that trip. You can check out how I’ve organized my own RV Pinterest boards here.

Think of boards as folders. These can be organized however you want, and one pin can be put in multiple folders for cross-categorization.

Over time you’ll build a great resource for trip planning. Your account becomes like a resource library and you become a part of the Pinterest information-sharing community (you can also set your boards to “private” if you’re feeling secretive about your travel plans).

(Pro tip: Many renters don’t travel their own kitchen utensils, RV toilet paper or comforters. You can offer these items as add-ons to your RV for extra money — it’s a win-win!)

By Liz Wilcox

Sure, everyone makes mistakes. But no one wants to look like a rookie on the road. Feeling like you don’t have a clue is stressful and embarrassing. And when it comes to RVing, being clueless can also be dangerous and costly.

Luckily, the worst mistakes can be avoided by doing a bit of homework and planning ahead. Here are some of the most common RV rookie mistakes — and how you can avoid them.

Before Your RV Trip

1. Not packing enough food (or packing too much!)

You can really work up an appetite setting up a campsite. There’s nothing worse than putting in time and hard work only to realize that you only brought enough graham crackers and chocolate for 2 nights of s’mores on your 4-night stay (so tragic!).

Conversely, it’s important not to overpack. Unless you’re headed to the middle of nowhere, you probably don’t need a three months’ supply of canned goods. (See this article on 5 Things To Leave At Home On Your Next RV Trip for more things you probably don’t need to haul around.)

Avoid both mistakes by meal planning beforehand.

Don’t underestimate the power of pen and paper. Write down all the meals you need for your trip — think simple, one-pot recipes — and make a grocery list. Take your list to the store and ensure you’ve marked every thing off the list before checkout.

2. Not making reservations

While a pro may know the ins and outs of every campground within a 500-mile radius, the novice RVer probably does not. After a long day of driving, you don’t want to pull up to the RV park of your dreams only to find out they don’t have a spot for you.

There are several reasons a park may not be able to accommodate you:

Some campgrounds only allow motorhomes and trailers less than 10 years of age

A campground may not have campsites long enough for your generously sized Class A vehicle.

If RVing with kids, RV parks may charge a child tax that you aren’t willing to pay.

Some RV parks are only for seniors

And of course, an RV park may simply be full by the time you get there.

It is best to do your research, call prospective campgrounds and make reservations before you head out on your adventure.

3. Not planning your route

Maybe you love the feeling of driving in a car, unconcerned with routes or plans. But the fact is, getting lost in an RV is not like getting lost in a car. It’s really stressful!.

Where can I turn around safely? Are they any low bridges I need to worry about if I continue down this road? Am I legally allowed to make this turn? Can I cross this intersection without causing a traffic jam?

Planning your route in advance can help you avoid any blunders. The Rand McNally Atlas and Trucker’s Atlas list low-clearance roads, truck stops, and more. Online tools like the Good Sam Club trip planner or Roadtrippers.com are also great for planning the perfect RV road trip route.

At the RV Park Or Campground

4. Not following camp etiquette

No matter how much you feel at home there, a campground is not your backyard. There are certain rules that should be followed to ensure every RVer has a good time.

Read and follow the camp or RV park rules.

Don’t play your music too loudly or for too long.

Avoid walking through other RVers’ campsites. Going around to the bathhouse isn’t going to hurt you.

Let the kids have fun, but make sure they are aware of others around them and of the campground rules.

Drive slowly. If you feel like you may be going too fast, you are.

Don’t engine for more than a few minutes — it can be disturbing to your neighbors.

Pick up after your pets and keep them on a leash at all times.

5. Leaving your curtains up at night

While this mistake won’t cost you anything, it can lead to some awkward experiences. Campsites at
RV parks and campgrounds are usually pretty lose together. Leaving your curtains or blinds up allows everyone to see right into your rig.

Give yourself some privacy and save others from the temptation to snoop by pulling down the shades once the sun sets.

Packing Up Your RV

6. Being underprepared at the dump station

Being unprepared at the dump station with a line of people ready to hit the road behind you is a fast way to become the least popular person at camp.

Research how to dump your tanks well before you drive up to the station. You can do this by reading your RV manual, watching YouTube videos or even asking people around the park. If you’re renting an RV on Campanda, be sure to ask the owner about your tanks when you pick up the vehicle.

It’s important to put everything you need for this special RV experience together in one convenient place. This allows for easy access when you pull up to the dump station and easy clean up when you leave.

7. Forgetting to do the walk-around

Before you hit the road, you must walk around your RV. Check to ensure everything is put away and in its proper place for highway driving.

Now do it again.

Two walk-arounds may seem excessive, but trust me, spending a few extra minutes checking your RV is better than driving off with your awning still out or your sewer hose dragging behind you.

(Yes, that really does happen. We RVers call these “drive off disasters.”)

Save yourself the headache of trying to remember everything when you break camp by using a checklist. Be sure to:

Do a walk-around and check your antenna, lights, tow vehicle connections, windows and vents

Make sure that your storage doors are closed and locked

Check that your cupboards and fridge doors are secure

Test your turn signals, brakes and headlights for safety

On The Road

8. Moving too quickly

RVs are great for many things. Moving quickly is not one of them.

Driving under pressure may lead to some bad decisions. You may pack up too quickly and forget to secure items in and outside the rig. Or you could drive too fast and put yourself and your passengers at risk, not to mention the other vehicles on the road.

An RV — whether it’s a motorhome or a towed vehicle — really shouldn’t be flying down the highway.

And the fact is, trying to cover too much ground in too little time is incredibly stressful. Avoid cramming too much experience into your short window of vacation time. Slow down and really enjoy the RV experience by taking it one day at a time.

When you plan a trip, use Google Maps to determine how much time it will take. Then add 15 to 25 minutes to every hour. That should give you a better idea of how long it will actually take to get to your destination.

9. Ignoring sounds and signs that something is wrong

RVs have a lot of moving parts. There’s nothing like driving down the highway in an RV, listening to something beep or rattle behind you as you try to merge lanes to help you realize you’ve got something terribly wrong.

While on the road, be sure to listen to your rig and check your mirrors often to be certain you are secure and safe.

If you see something flapping in your rearview mirror, stop immediately to secure it. Hear a weird scraping sound? You better pull over ASAP to find the problem.

Remember, an RV is a large piece of equipment. That means large problems can arise. Always err on the side of caution. Pull over as quickly as possible to investigate any abnormal sounds or signs that your rig is not 100% safe.

The Biggest Mistake

The biggest mistake an RV newbie can make?

10. Giving up on your RV dreams because you think you’re not up to the task.

The fact is, RVing can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be hard. Don’t be afraid to admit your mistakes and ask for help from other RVers. Most slip ups are minor and can be chalked up to learning experience — and a good story to tell around your next campfire.

Do your homework, pay attention and stay calm. (And seriously, do that second walk-around.)

Renting an RV is a fantastic way to get into the RV life. And with Campanda, you’re backed by a support system of some really excellent people — not to mention 24/7 roadside assistance (just in case).

Some people like to call their RV their “home on wheels.” I say that my RV is like my “backpack on wheels” because I pack light by bringing the most effective and efficient gear.

I’m a fairly experienced backpacker and have traveled throughout North America, New Zealand and Europe. When I first started backpacking, I overpacked fearing that I wouldn’t have something I needed. Over time, I learned that less is more and taking only what you need makes for a more enjoyable adventure.

Now, I live, work and travel full time in my RV. Even though an RV is much larger than a backpack (obviously), the “less is more” principle still applies.

Packing Light Makes Your RV Safer

Check your RV weight at weigh stations to find out how much extra baggage you’re really hauling around.

This past year, my husband and I camped with several of our RV friends who are very experienced in RV safety. They were concerned that we had yet to weigh our RV, which is important to ensure proper balance and weight distribution.

We knew it was an important step, but somehow we had failed to make it a priority. They successfully put the fear in us and the first thing we did after leaving was drive straight to the closest weigh station.

You can imagine our relief when we discovered that we were 1,000 pounds underweight!

Part of the reason we “lucked out” is that we pack light. By not overpacking, we were a step ahead in the safety department.

Packing Light Lets You Focus On What’s Important

Packing your RV light allows you to focus on what’s important: spending quality time in nature — alone or with friends and family — and recharging from the frenetic pace of everyday life.

When you pack for your RV adventure, you might start imagining all the activities you could possibly do. Before you know it, you’ve packed every item imaginable. We tend to romanticize all the possibilities and bring things “just in case” we decide to raft that river or conquer that peak on our mountain bikes.

I’ve seen 40-foot RVs hauling a storage unit packed so full that even the top is covered in gear. There is nothing wrong with bringing things if you really plan to use them. But be mindful that not only do those things add weight, time and complexity to your trip, but sometimes you won’t even use them.

I’m a believer of packing the essentials and leaving the rest behind.

What To Bring

There’s no “one size fits all” packing list — every RV adventure, family and situation is different. That said, here are some general guidelines and considerations to help you pack lighter for your next trip:

1. Safety and Emergency Items

Check your onboard safety items.

Safety items should be number one on your list. Depending on where you’re headed, they could be the difference between life or death. I don’t mean to sound so grim, but ensuring your family’s safety is really important. Plus, knowing that you’re prepared for anything will give you the peace of mind to really enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Check your RV’s list of safety equipment — smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detector, a fire extinguisher, etc. — to make sure everything is included. Also make sure you have things like extra water, emergency equipment like flares and any medications that you made need.

Visit Escapees for some great additional resources on RV safety.

2. Food

Be realistic about how much food you can actually bring.

What food you bring — and how much — will depend on your destination, trip length and storage capacity. For example, some RVs have residential-sized refrigerators, which can hold a lot of food. Others may have a smaller propane fridge or an even tinier hotel-sized fridge.

Remember to bring snacks and food items for your outdoor excursions. And bring plenty of water, especially if you are traveling to dry places. Don’t rely on city water or even your tank water — bring additional gallons or bottles just to be safe.

3. Clothes

My windbreaker is warm, super light and packs very small. You can find similar ones at REI. This one has been to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro!

Deciding on what clothes to bring is often tricky. Even if you check the weather in advance, you never know if it might change.

The best approach is to bring items that are light and can be worn in a variety of situations, like waterproof pants that you can throw over another pair or a windbreaker that can be used for both warmth and to block wind.

Be sure to bring a pair of sturdy shoes and at least one pair of thick socks to keep your feet dry. A hat to block the sun is essential and, depending on the season, you might want to consider a pair of long underwear or moisture-wicking t-shirts and shorts.

4. Household Items

If you are renting an RV from Campanda, many household items may already be included (be sure to check with the owner). If you do need to bring some of your own items, remember that when it comes to kitchen items, less is definitely more. One good cutting knife, one multi-purpose pot/pan, some silverware and paper plates go a long way.

You may also want to consider picking up something like the InstantPot Pressure Cooker, which is popular with the RV crowd because it’s like three kitchen appliances in one.

And there’s one item that I could not live without — a coffee maker! We use a french press in our RV because it makes great coffee and doesn’t require electricity. Nothing beats a hot cup of coffee in the morning while listening to the sounds of the forest.

5. Toys And Gadgets

Look for lightweight gear like inflatable paddle boards to maximize fun without adding bulk.

Only bring what you think you’ll actually use. We have a few very lightweight “fun” items like the NIXY inflatable stand-up paddle board, which we use in oceans and lakes.

Everyone loves a good toy — both kids and kids at heart — and things like paddle boards are fun and provide healthy activity. Just be sure not to overpack (or pack light items) to avoid adding unnecessary weight and clutter to your RV.

Things To Leave Behind

There are some things you simply don’t need to bring on your RV vacation:

Heavy books. This might seem obvious, and nowadays who doesn’t use an electronic device for books? My husband Bryce, that’s who! He hauled around bins of books until I finally encouraged him to purge them.

High-heeled shoes. These can actually be dangerous and cause a twisted or broken ankle. And let’s be honest — you’re never going to need those stilettos on an RV trip.

Electronics and computers. They may not work without a decent cell signal. If you do plan on bringing these items, be sure to figure out a plan for getting internet before setting off so you can actually use them on your trip.

Workout equipment like kettlebells. Seriously, my friends packed these and never used them.

Friends or family members with a bad attitude. Just kidding (sort of).

This article was not only about how to pack light on your RV trip, but also about how to really enjoy your RV experience.

Think about it this way: part of the fun of an RV journey is getting away from it all, enjoying the outdoors and connecting with your loved ones. Don’t let all the extra stuff distract you from the peace and tranquility that you’re really seeking.
